Target EDI requirements (U.S.)
Target requires its suppliers to receive purchase orders by EDI, and its domestic vendors to be paid by electronic funds transfer. An error-free advance ship notice (856) must reach Target before the trailer arrives in its yard: a missing or inaccurate one costs $0.75 per carton, $100 minimum. The fill rate goal is 95% of the original order, with 5% of the cost of goods charged on units short or over.

Deadlines and compliance targets
- ASN: an error-free 856 before the in-yard date and time of the delivering trailer. The goal is 100%.
- Fill rate: 95% of the original order quantity, measured per item and location; overages count as well as shortages.
- Arrival: shipments to non-perishable regional distribution centres may arrive no more than one day before the ship window starts; early and late arrivals are both penalized.
- Collect shipments: entered in Target’s Vendor Ready Ship program by 11 a.m. Central, two business days before the requested pickup date.
- Barcodes: every carton received with a legible, scannable barcode. The requirements are in Partners Online.
Compliance fees
| Violation | Fee |
|---|---|
| ASN not available before the trailer arrives | $0.75 per carton, $100 minimum |
| ASN inaccurate (bill of lading number, or item data that does not match the order) | $0.75 per carton, $100 minimum |
| Carton barcode that cannot be scanned | $0.75 per carton, $100 minimum |
| Fill rate under 95% | 5% of the cost of goods short or over |
| Goods not ready for pickup, or arriving early or late | $150 minimum |
| Not shipped within the agreed window, or shipping schedule not followed (collect) | 2.5% of the cost of goods |
As summarized by SPS Commerce: the per-carton ASN and barcode fees apply to orders measured from May 2025 (updated March 20, 2025); the fill rate and on-time rules took effect August 4, 2024 (updated April 5, 2024). Suppliers have 90 days to dispute once a compliance deduction is created (updated July 18, 2024). Your vendor agreement is what applies.

Read Target’s specifications
12 of the documents above are published segment by segment, free, with a validator that checks your own file against them.
Build the 856 and 810 from each order
Each 850 becomes your ship notice and invoice without rekeying, so the item data on the 856 matches the order, with carton structures and SSCC labels.
See what Target deducted
On Weredi Plus, the deduction ledger matches each deduction to its invoice and builds a bilingual dispute pack, inside the 90 days.
One flat price

How you connect
Target sets up each vendor’s EDI through Partners Online, its vendor portal, and does not publish its connection options outside it. Weredi exchanges X12 documents directly over AS2, SFTP or FTP: confirm with Target’s EDI team which connection it will set up for your account. This page covers Target’s U.S. merchandise vendors; Target Plus, its marketplace, works differently.
